1. Creating an index of place names from a map.

You will need two additional things for this to work.

    a. No line breaks (returns) in your text blocks (this will split your names into two parts).

    b. Microsoft Excel or another spreadsheet program.

    • Open your map in FreeHand.
    • Export your file as 'ASCII Text'.
    • Open the text file in Excel.
    • Highlight the single column of text.
    • Sort (under the options menu) by rows in ascending order.
    • You should now have an alphabetic listing of your place names.
    • You can copy the highlighted column and paste it into FreeHand.
    • Or, if the listing is too large, save the Excel file as text and in FreeHand you will be able to place the file into your document creating an index.

Please send your tips in so we can all share them and hopefully make life that much easier.
