Britain's biggest-selling series of travel guides for independent travellers requires a Cartographer. Principal duties include creating maps using Freehand, to our own design specifications, liasing with editors and production staff and assisting the Cartography Manager in all aspects of map production.

Database Cartographer

We are currently looking to recruit a Database Cartographer to join the Cheltenham-based team working on our London, Great Britain and British Isles databases.

Your main focus would be on the processing of non-graphic information, and particularly verifying and maintaining non-graphic and index databases, and creating from them a variety of published and customised products.

You should have a degree, preferably in Cartography or GIS, and sound analytical and problem-solving skills. Experience with Arc/Info, Foxpro, Access and Excel would be advantageous.

We are looking for someone who will contribute enthusiastically to the work of the cartographic teams, demonstrating a flexible and dedicated approach to the demands of a challenging work programme.

CARTOGRAPHIC EDITOR

The successful candidate will work on maps and indexes for a wide range of world reference and educational atlases for the UK and overseas markets, as part of a dedicated and enthusiastic team.

Based at our Map Studio, in pleasant surroundings at Croxley Business Park, Watford, the position involves:

* Preparation of map designs, atlas schemes, map layouts, cartographic
specifications, estimates, schedules and revision copy for all Philip's
reference atlas products and outside suppliers.
* Liaising with other members of staff, working to tight production deadlines
to produce high-quality atlas maps and indexes.
* Detailed checking at all stages of the cartographic flowline.
* Collection and management of source information, including journals, statistical sources and the Internet.

You will need a degree or equivalent qualification in Geography or Cartography, with a good general knowledge of current world affairs and geography, and preferably some knowledge of current cartographic production methods. The ability to work to tight production deadlines, whilst maintaining a high degree of accuracy, initiative and enthusiasm, is essential.

Cartographers / Editors

We are currently seeking an additional cartographer / editor to supplement our small, busy team in Guildford, Surrey.

Prospective employees should have a cartographic background, the ability to research and compile good quality editorial compilations, a good knowledge of software packages such as Freehand, Illustrator and Photoshop, and the willingness to take on responsibility. We are primarily interested in people who can work both as editors and Mac operators as the work demands but will also consider individuals who have relevant experience in either field.

Our work is very varied and includes the compilation and drawing of town and city plans for tourist organisations, the design and production of walk maps and booklets, and work for major UK publishers.

We are based in pleasant offices on the outskirts of Guildford, Surrey. Salary is dependent on experience and also what you can bring to our Company in the way of versatility, ideas, initiative etc.
