    • Ordnance Survey is now giving away a selection of free, downloadable, basic small-scale maps of Great Britain for you to use for your own purpose. GB outlines with and without administrative boundaries are available in EPS, TIF, PDF and GIF format.
    • GeoAtlas has some sample maps for free downloading in jpeg format .

    DEMs

    • California State University Northridge has all 7.5 min DEMs for California.
    • GTOPO30 is a global digital elevation model (DEM) with a horizontal grid spacing of 30 arc seconds (approximately 1 kilometer).
    • PSU Earth System Science Center Database The database contains a variety of geographically referenced data sets.
    • UC Berkley has DEMs for the San Francisco Bay area with a clickable map.
    • University of Hawaii has a varity of DEMs of Hawaii.
    • USGS DEMs by state. Or use their hyperlink map.

    Vector Data

    • Online Map Creation You may create maps interactively at this site. Fill out the form, submit your entries and a page with the desired map will be returned to your browser. The maps are actually created by the "Generic Mapping Tools" (GMT). This means a PostScript* version is drawn first which you can download onto your harddisk after completion.

    Symbols

    • The USGS has a sizable collection of public domain map and geologic symbols and patterns.
    • Population is a small collection of cartography symbols. Great for making maps or use them as unusual bullets in your document.
    • Avenza Software has a Parks Font containing the symbols and pictographs that are used in the creation of National Parks Service maps for both Mac and PC free to download.
